ATHLOS: The FUTURE of Women’s Sports

Yesterday I was able to attend the first ever Athlos event where female track athletes competed for the largest purse attainable in competition for their races. The concept: to help support women’s sporting events and PROVE that female athletes and women’s sporting events are just as compelling and lucrative as men’s. This SOLD OUT event was held at Icahn Stadium on Roosevelt Island and both a healing and exciting experience. Seeing so many young girls and women excited to watch the FASTEST women alive compete, complete with a slew of athletes, artists, moguls and icons in attendance to share in the joy of these women’s accomplishments was profound. The night even ended with a powerhouse performance by Megan Thee Stallion (if y’all took my old Peloton ride you KNOW she is a vibe #realhotgirlshit). By far the coolest feature of the incredibly well-produced event was the fact 10% of all revenues from ticketing, commercial sponsorship and broadcast will be re-distributed to all participating athletes. So often the argument against equity for female athletes has been that “women don’t draw crowds like the men do” however, there truly hasn’t been the same level of production, broadcast rights or monetary investment to even validate that perspective.

What Athlos exemplifies is that if you build the proper event, collectively rally the community, activate strong sponsors and create a business model that allows the athletes to truly perform as the stars they are soon enough…EVERYONE WATCHES WOMENS SPORTS. A great media brand supporting that narrative is Togethxr who actively advocates for funding, exposure and the development of sport and frankly is damn cool while doing so. Their presence as well a slew of media outlets from NYtimes, Vogue, NBC and more were all in on the action.

2024 has emerged as a standout year for women. The Olympics were dominated by female athletes, iconic voices have emerged like Ilona Maher into the athlete-lifestyle space and true role models in the form of Simone Biles, Suni Lee to standout legacy voices like Serena & Venus Willams, Bille Jean King, Lindsey Vonn and a plethora more have shown that dreaming of becoming a professional athlete now is becoming a more fiscally viable career path, in many thanks to social media and new ways to capture audience and eyeballs.

The future looks bright for female athletes so long as we continue to have investment by advocates and thought-leaders like Alexis Ohanian (who created the event) and VC/coroporate collaborations to continue to push the narrative forward for women’s sports. We aren’t there yet, but last night did prove one thing: INVEST IN WOMENS SPORTS.

GRATITUDE IN COLLECTIVE:

This past week we’ve partnered up with the Never Knocked Out Crew to give you a challenge we can complete together: a downloadable gratitude worksheet. “I didn’t realize just how much better the day became when I made it a habit to be grateful in the morning & evening” - NKO Club member.

Seeing how each of you has saved and filled out this document daily is not only inspiration but empowering for all of us to do the same, especially on the rough days. Check out our @nkoclub instragram highlights for some of the many favorite entries and share the file below with your friends and family to always have on hand.

I want to keep this habit going as we prep our October challenge: SOBER OCTOBER… this form will help for what we have next month!

PROTEIN
~42- 60g protein (depending on ingredients)

Great for when you start getting the sniffles

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3-4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil

  • 1 1/2 tsp. cumin

  • 1 tsp. chili powder

  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp. salt

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil

  • 1 c. diced onion

  • 1/4 c. diced green bell pepper

  • 1/4 c. red bell pepper

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 can (10 ounces) Rotel Tomatoes & Green Chilies

  • 32 oz. low-sodium chicken stock OR 16 oz. Chicken Bone Broth and 16 oz. Stock

  • 3 Tbsp. tomato paste

  • 4 c. hot water

  • 1 Can (8 ounces) black beans, drained (OPTIONAL)

  • 3 Tbsp. cornmeal or masa

  1. Preheat the oven to 375˚. Mix cumin, chili pepper, garlic powder, and salt. Drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil on chicken breasts, then sprinkle a small amount of spice mix on both sides. Set aside the rest of the spice mix. (I like to “over-spice” so feel free to indulge to you liking!)

  2. Place chicken breasts on a baking sheet. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until chicken is done. Use two forks to shred chicken. Set aside.

  3. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a pot over medium high heat. Add onions, red pepper, green pepper, and minced garlic. Stir and begin cooking, then add the rest of the spice mix. Stir to combine, then add shredded chicken and stir.

  4. Pour in Rotel, chicken stock, tomato paste, water, and optionally black beans. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer for 45 minutes, uncovered.

  5.  Mix cornmeal with a small amount of water. Pour into the soup, then simmer for an additional 15 minutes. Check seasonings, adding more if needed---add more chili powder if it needs more spice, and be sure not to undersalt.

  6. Ladel into bowls and top with crunchy tortilla strips, cheese and any extra seasonings you may like!
